FEDERAL GOVT APPROVES N1.86B FOR LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION

FEDERAL GOVT APPROVES N1.86B FOR LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION

The Federal Government is beginning to look into the direction of investing into the country’s reading culture

It confirmed the approval of the sum of N1.86bn to construct the branches of the National Library of Nigeria in five states.
The N1,862,162,086, is expected to be expended on 22 projects across the country.

The projects are the construction of the National Library branches in Taraba, Gombe, Katsina, Osun and Oyo states; the purchase of foreign references and the development of the National Virtual Library.
The National Librarian and NLN Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Lenrie Aina, told newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday that the projects were important to ensure that the library fulfilled its core mandate.
Aina, who lamented that more than one million books were published in the country yearly, but only 10 per cent were remitted to the library, noted that the contractors to execute the projects had been warned not to offer bribes to the library workers.
