Inspector General Of Police urges Police officers not to retaliate against the Nigerian Navy
Days after the attack by Naval officers on the Police in Cross-River, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris,
on Friday urged men of the Cross River State Police Command and officers across to country not to retaliate Tuesday’s attack on Akim Police Station in Calabar by some ratings of the Nigerian Navy.
A naval rating was on Tuesday shot in the shoulder by a policeman after an argument over traffic infractions. The situation later degenerated into a fracas in which two policemen were killed by naval operatives while a section of the Akim Police Station, along the IBB Way, was burnt.
The Inspector-General of Police, who inspected the burnt facilities at the police station including two vehicles, said an independent panel of inquiry would soon be set up to unmask those behind the fracas.
Idris, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Training and Capacity Development, Mr. Emmanuel Inyang, said it was unfortunate that a minor incident was allowed to escalate to the level it got to.
The DIG, alongside the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Abubakar Marafa and the Commander, Nigeria Navy Ship Victory, Commodore Salihu Jibril including the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, visited the two policemen injured at the police clinic and the naval rating at a navy clinic in Calabar.
