Child abuse is not just physical violence directed at a child.
It is any form of maltreatment by an adult, which is violent or threatening for the child. This includes neglect. When child abuse occurs in the home and the abuser is, for example, the child's parent or care-giver, this is a form of domestic violence.4 Types of child abuse are broken down
in four distinct categories
PHYSICAL
ABUSE
Physical abuse is any intentional bodily injury or trauma to another
person or animal by way of bodily contact
SEXUAL
ABUSE
The act of making someone take part in sexual activities,
against their will, or without their consent
EMOTIONAL
ABUSE
Emotional abuse is a pattern of behavior in which the perpetrator
insults, humiliates, and generally instills fear in an individual in order to
control them
NEGLECT
ABUSE
Neglect
includes inadequate health care, education, supervision, protection from
hazards in the environment, and unmet basic needs such as clothing and food.
SIGNS OF CHILD ABUSED
Signs of child abuse depend on a
child’s age and the type of abuse they are suffering from. Some may not show
major external signs, and just because a child does show these signs does not
mean they are being abused.
If you suspect that a child is being
abused, you should report it so the child can receive help. Signs and symptoms
of child abuse may include:
- Aggressive
or violent behavior
- Risk-taking
behaviors
- Injuries around the genitals
- Withdrawn
or clingy behavior
- Sudden
changes in behavior
- Delayed
development
- Emotional
outbursts
- Repetitive
movements, such as rocking, sucking, and biting
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Physical
injuries such as welts, belt marks, bite marks, and fractures
- Loss
of interest in hobbies or other activities a child was once interested in
- Obsessive
compulsive behavior
- Suicidal thoughts
- Difficulty
communicating with others
- Distrust
or fear of adults
